Significance

This has been a good thought that has distracted me from my ridiculous life circumstances. What are some things we have created of which we don't know their exact significance?
What is the significance of Wifi? The internet is clearly a big deal and I'm not eliminating cell phones from connecting but specifically, what if Wifi was never created? The internet still exists, the method of connecting to the Internet, wifi, doesn't exist now, within this hypothetical, what is different?
What about flip flops/sandals? What if they were never created? Never thought of. What is different?
What if the word "fuck" had never been created? That would fucking suck. What would be so fucking different though?
It is difficult to fathom a reality where these things don't exist because they do. It would be impossible for anyone to claim they could compartmentalize well enough to accurately consider the possibilities of a reality that doesn't exist.
If we are to try to consider the possibilities of a reality where something doesn't exist, we would likely start with figuring out why that thing exists at all in the first place. What is the causation?
There are two reasons that anything is created. Either by accident or by trying to solve a problem. If we are using the language of my meta theory, we create things to manage entropy.
Often, logically, when something new is created, it is created as a result of specific reasoning. We don't always use things for the same reasons they are created though. A relatively significant part of creativity and open mindedness is using things in ways they weren't created to be used.
What are some other things that were created but seemingly didn't have to be?

Stuffed animals is the first thing that came to mind.
